Congratulations to our 2016 Hall of Fame Inductees! Please join us at the Hall of Fame Dinner on Tuesday, May 17 at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum as we celebrate the accomplishments of these two outstanding New Mexicans!
When Calvin Tafoya, a Native American businessman of the Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico, embarked upon his banking career, he discovered that a lack of cultural communication discouraged tribes in his state from interacting with many conventional banks. Working throughout Northern New Mexico as a banker, he encouraged economic development and participation by Tribes.
He was the first Indian Tourism Liaison at the New Mexico Tourism Department. He set the stage, pre-casino, for developing and assisting tribes in tourism development and coordination between non-tribal tourism entities and tribes. He was responsible for many of the casino negotiations and oversaw any tribal advertising and promotion, helping develop an award winning campaign in 1991. He traveled extensively for the Department developing major international tourism conduits.
Tafoya served a term as the Governor of Santa Clara Pueblo as well as the Tribal Administrator and Economic Development Director. In 2001, Mr. Tafoya started the Santa Clara Development Corporation and as CEO/President was responsible for developing major tourism infrastructure in Espanola including the Black Mesa Golf Course, The Santa Claran Hotel and Casino, the Puye Cliffs Travel Center and re-opening Puye Cliffs. Mr. Tafoya also served on the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center/Indian Pueblos Marketing, Inc. Board of Directors for over 20 years. His leadership and commitment to his home community of Santa Clara, and the 19 Pueblos, in the area of economic development and tourism will forever be remembered.
On September 4, 2015, he passed away at the age of 67.
There are few in the entertainment industry that have not worked with, or have been touched by Barbara "Mother" Hubbard. Her love of people and dedication to New Mexico State University (NMSU) and Las Cruces is unshaking. She has contributed in making Las Cruces a destination to visit over and over again by ensuring that the biggest acts in music and entertainment are booked at the Pan American Center.
During her years at the Pan American Center, Hubbard brought in acts from Bob Hope and Garth Brooks to U2 and George Strait. In 1969, after Hubbard booked her first big act, Bob Hope, she started thinking about how to fill the Pan American Center when it would otherwise stand empty and unused. She realized that the Las Cruces community should capitalize on its location between Dallas and Phoenix to attract entertainers to play here while traveling between the two larger cities.
Hubbard is a founding member of the Las Cruces Country Music Festival which was started as a way to attract visitors from the region (and nationally) to stay in Las Cruces and enjoy a weekend full of country music.
The Hall of Fame Dinner is an annual event during the Governor's Conference where the industry recognizes an individual or group who has cooperatively enhanced New Mexico tourism. Click to learn more about the Hall of Fame Dinner, including past inductees.

A nominee is defined as an individual, alive or deceased, an icon (such as Smokey Bear), or a group of two or more people who have cooperatively enhanced New Mexico tourism. The individuals honored as inductees live, or have lived, in New Mexico and have made substantial and sustained contributions to the state’s tourism industry through leadership and service as follows:
