We wanted to update you on the newest member of the New Mexico Senate. The Governor has appointed Ted Barela (R) to fill the vacancy created when Senator Phil Griego (D) resigned due to an ethics probe. Sen. Barela was sworn in on Friday. With Barela's appointment, the Senate is now composed of 24 Democrats and 18 Republicans. Sen. Barela is a former mayor of Estancia and is a projects manager for an Albuquerque engineering firm (Bohannan Huston). All 42 senate seats are up for election next year. Sen. Barela is expected to seek election to the six county district. The district covers parts of Santa Fe, San Miguel, Torrance, Bernalillo, Lincoln, and Valencia counties, and the District has a majority of Democrats. Therefore, election for a Republican will be tough. Liz Stefanics, a Santa Fe county commissioner who once held the seat, but lost it to Phil Griego, has announced that she will run for the seat.
