2017 Tourism Professional of the Year Finalist
Kelly Stewart
Marketing Specialist – Los Alamos County
What was your first job in the hospitality industry?
After I graduated from college with a degree in journalism and international studies, I did a short stint in the hospitality industry, working at several hotels and restaurants on Nantucket Island. While I honed my marketing and communications skills working in several different industries around the country, it was at Los Alamos County where I’ve ad the opportunity to market a destination!
Who has helped/mentored you through your career?
I’ve been lucky to have more than one mentor throughout my career, all strong, intelligent women. They started as my bosses but continue to inspire me through their bold and courageous decisions and achievements…from starting their own companies, to leaving their businesses and starting new ventures.
What has been the highlight of your career?
Winning this award would be such an unexpected achievement. Recognition from my peers in the industry for work that brings me such joy.
What is one thing you would tell young people entering the hospitality business?
Engage with your industry through organizations like the New Mexico Hospitality Association! The contacts and connections you make with this group of people become invaluable resources, colleagues, mentors and the best friends!
What are your favorite places to visit in New Mexico?
To date, I truly loved touring Georgia O’Keeffe Country on horseback! There are so many areas and attractions in this state I have yet to experience. I can’t wait!
